Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2021-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Mar 2022

The 2016 The Tempest shows all of the bold dark fruit that is typical of this bottling, but with more nuance than most vintages and all the vertical energy that is such a signature of this great Napa Valley vintage. Time in the glass brings out myriad shades of nuance and complexity that lead into a finish laced with hints of grilled herb, lavender, spice and menthol. The interplay of supple fruit and energy makes for a compelling wine to enjoy over the next handful of years, give or take.

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2021-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2020

The 2016 The Tempest shows all of the forward fruit that is typical of this wine, but with more nuance and vertical energy that lend complexity as well as character. Grilled herb, lavender, spice and menthol are some of the many aromas and flavors that give the 2016 its layered, alluring personality.

Starting with the thee blends (The Tempest, Falstaff, and The Bard), the 2016 The Tempest is always a Merlot-dominated release and is 66% Merlot and 34% Cabernet Sauvignon in 2016. It comes from multiple sites in the valley and sports a deep purple color as well as a rocking bouquet of plums, chocolate, scorched earth, and spice box, with an alluring mole-like character developing in the glass. It’s deep, rich, and powerful on the palate, yet has a forward, layered style as well as rocking purity, no hard edges, sweet tannins, and a great finish. My money is on it being one of the finest Merlot-dominated blends in the vintage.

Gorgeous blackberries, dark chocolate and hazelnuts. Rich, yet there’s underlying subtlety. Full-bodied, tight and tannic with focus and intensity. This is very firm and framed. Wonderful finish. Drink or hold.
