Here's an interesting bit of news. This wine is a blend of fruit from four villages in Chianti Classico. However, those single vineyards will soon be bottled as their own distinct Gran Selezione wines. For now, we have the 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori. This was a productive vintage that resulted in good yields thanks to abundant rainfall at the beginning of the season. The wine's tension and firmness remind me of the classic 2016 vintage, but 2019 ultimately shows more richness and accessibility. This wine is layered with dark fruit, crushed stone and pretty spice. The big news from Marchesi Antinori is that the estate is embracing a collective push to give more identity to the villages, or comuni, that make up the appellation. Made with a blend of fruit from four villages, the Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori will be parceled and made into four distinct single-vineyard (or single-comune) Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines. I have not tasted them yet, but we should be seeing these new wines soon.

This wine sources its fruit exclusively from the Tenuta Tignanello in San Casciano Val di Pesa. The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is a generous and open-knit wine with pretty plushness and dark fruit flavors of cherry, plum and dried currant. It ages in barrique with a lot of secondhand or otherwise neutral oak, and that's why the fruit comes through with such clarity. This is one of the big surprises of this flight, and this vintage certainly punches above its price point. These results show depth, harmony and lasting fruit flavors. This is a solid recommendation.

A dense, beefy red, with black cherry, blackberry, earth and iron flavors coursing through. Balanced, in a compact sort of way, with a lingering finish of earth and dark fruit. Bright acidity drives the finish. Best from 2024 through 2033. 6,000 cases imported.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is rich, layered and exceptionally polished. This is an especially serious vintage for the Marchese Antinori. All of the fruit comes from the Antinori family's Tignanello estate. Silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red cherry/plum, spice, leather and tobacco. There's tremendous weight, power and depth, that much is pretty clear.
