The 1999 Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits an austere, tobacco-led, Medoc nose with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins and a drying, meaty finish. Drink now. Much lighter bottle than the 2001 and 2002. Cork broke though and was impossible to extract fully. Powerful ripe cassis/Cabernet aromas. A bit of heat and dust on the finish though no hint of the underripe notes that can plague inexpensive Chilean reds. Still a little tannin on the finish. A serious, ambitious wine with real presence in the mouth and an attractively appetising dry finish. (JR)
