Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2024-2044, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2009 Romanée St. Vivant has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. Sweet red cherries, roses, mint and orange peel float on the palate in this sensual, utterly beguiling wine. This is an effortless, gracious Burgundy of the highest level. The 2009 character comes through in spades, but there is something about the Romanée St. Vivant that transcends vintage. Call it the utmost in classicism. The Romanée St. Vivant can be slow out of the gate, but once it starts blossoming in bottle it is truly majestic. Readers lucky enough to find the 2009 are in for a treat.

My tasting at Dujac was one of the highlights of the two weeks I spent in Burgundy in late November/early December 2011. I tasted through all the 2010s in barrel and 2009s in bottle. The domaine’s 2009s are among the wines of the vintage. Importers: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (415) 491-4724; Martin Scott Wines, Little Neck, NY; tel. Deep red with ruby highlights. Liqueur-like cherry and raspberry aromas are lifted by a floral topnote and complemented by cocoa powder. Dense, supple, creamy and sweet, but with a superb spine of acidity and solid minerality currently keeping the fruit under wraps. A very youthful 2009: juicy, imploded, savory and gripping. The slowly mounting finish features firm but suave tannins and outstanding persistence.
