Punteggio 87/100 · Da bere 2024-2030, Neal Martin, Apr 2024

The 1984 Montrose might be the only occasion whereby this vintage might surpass the previous vintage, depending upon the bottle, of course. Picked between 26 September and 12 October, the great David Peppercorn MW wrote that this vintage contains 85% Cabernet Sauvignon since the Merlot was affected by coulure. Boasting more fruit than you would expect, one finds touches of mulberry, faded rose petals and light mulberry scents. It's a little slight in style, but considering the season, it's forgivable. The palate has a hint of Japanese wakame, tincturing the light red fruit with a strong attenuation on the finish. Yet this is definitely one of the best wines of a poor growing season. Tasted at the château.

Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2016-2026, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Mar 2017

Tasted at the château, the 1984 Montrose, picked between 26 September and 12 October, surprisingly has a more appealing bouquet than the 1983. David Peppercorn writing in “Bordeaux” points out that the 1984 contained 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, since the Merlot was affected by coulure. It certainly offers slightly more fruit, with light red plum and mulberry scents, hints of rose petal. It is pretty in a light and ephemeral manner. The palate is medium-bodied and fresher than the 1983. There is a light marine influence here, a hint of seaweed infusing the red berry fruit. It attenuates towards the finish, but that does not prevent you from returning for another sip. As 1984 Left Banks go, Montrose must surely be up there with the best (even if I would drink it sooner rather than later). Tasted September 2016.
