Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Lightly leafy and cedary, pretty oaky. Thick, chewy, smooth tannins. Deep-fruited. Could do with a little more freshness. Lots of oomph but a bit tough for now. (JH)

The 2020 Vieux Château Mazerat offers blackberry and cedar scents on the nose, quite classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins and pointed acidity, becoming more tertiary with an off-dry finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle, and it may meet my expectations out of barrel. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
Aromas of minty blackberries, cassis, licorice and sweet soil tones preface the 2020 Vieux Château Mazerat, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine with rich, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. This has turned out nicely.
