Punteggio 86/100 · Da bere 2025-2030, Neal Martin, Nov 2024

The 1978 Richebourg Grand Cru from Jean Gros feels a little flaccid on the nose, with simple dark berry fruit, bergamot and black tea. The palate is quite sweet and a bit leaden towards the finish, with rustic tannins. This is a stocky Richebourg that refuses to satiate the senses. Tasted at the 1978 Bouilland horizontal.

The 1978 Richebourg Grand Cru is also showing well, offering up sweet scents of cassis, blackcurrant leaf, dark chocolate, grilled meats, candied peel and spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, tangy and incisive, with the racy acids that are so typical of wines from this vintage, married with the amplitude of extended bottle age. One suspects that this was quite introverted and even reductive in its youth, but it's showing well today.
