Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2022-2028, Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, Jul 2022

From Vignobles Dourthe, a blend of 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot, harvested 20 September to 15 October 2018. Maceration and fermentation 25–28 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Aged six months in stainless steel, 12 months in oak barrels. Bottled 10 April 2020. RS 1.2 g/l, TA 3.16 g/l (expressed as sulphuric), pH 3.69. Diam closure. Deep garnet. Aromas of cedar and ripe cassis. Very dark-fruited. Firm, serious, dry and almost savoury, almost charry, though definitely not overly oaky. Not sure you would find this style outside of Bordeaux, so not sweet-fruited even in a ripe vintage, though there is no lack of fruit depth. Incredible that you can find serious bordeaux, with the capacity to age, at this price. Surprisingly elegant for a wine with 15% alcohol. VGV (JH)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Reserve du Chateau gives up notes of crushed blackberries, baked black plums and kirsch with touches of underbrush, charcoal and tobacco leaf. The medium to full-bodied palate gives a good amount of juicy black fruits with a chewy texture and refreshing finish.

The 2018 Pey La Tour Réserve du Château has a slightly smudged, dark-chocolate-tinged bouquet of predominantly red berry fruit mixed with incense. The palate is medium-bodied with a herbaceous opening and modest depth, but I find some attenuation toward the finish. Early drinking only.
