A longer term proposition, the reserved, polite 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Anglaises displays a ruby/purple color along with pure black raspberry, black currant and cherry fruit intertwined with hints of damp earth, graphite and spring flowers. Made in a full yet decidedly elegant style, this impressive, moderately tannic 2010 should be forgotten for 2-3 years and consumed over the following 12-15 years. Domaine de la Biscarelle is a relative newcomer, although the estate has been around for a number of years. Their domaine-bottled Chateauneuf du Papes, which emerge from ten acres of vines in the northwest sector of the appellation, near the road leading to the ancient Roman town of Orange, are primarily Grenache blended with a touch of Cinsault. Vivid ruby. Powerful, youthfully primary aromas of cherry pit and dark berries, with notes of licorice and herbs emerging with aeration. Chewy and focused, offering deep blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors that pick up spiciness with air. Finishes with firm tannic grip and a lingering note of candied licorice.

Dark purplish crimson. First bottle was quite badly TCA affected – even though just a cask sample. Second bottle still a bit hard on the finish but much richer fruit on the front palate. (JR)
