Aromas of cassis, rich loamy soil, espresso roast and incense introduce the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys Vieilles Vignes, a medium to full-bodied wine that's quite firm and tangy this year, displaying impressive depth of fruit but also structuring acids and tannins that will require some bottle age.

Bright red-ruby. Expressive aromas of black raspberry and animal fur, complicated by soil tones, licorice and mocha. A rich and spicy village Gevrey, with excellent energy to its rather intense flavors of blackberry and savory minerality. Finishes with firm tannins, good grip and rising length. This should be the least complex of Roty's three Gevrey lieux-dits but it's showing very well today.
The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Champs-Chenys Vieilles Vignes has a very refined bouquet with floral scents of peony and rose petal that infuse the sumptuous red cherry and redcurrant fruit. The palate is ravishingly pure on the entry with layers of concentrated black and blue fruit, hints of vanilla and blood orange. There is impressive volume to this Gevrey-Chambertin yet there is precision too. Superb. Tasted at the Domaine.
