Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Faconnieres from Virgile Lignier has an intense and vigorous bouquet with mulberry, blackberry and undergrowth aromas that are detailed and quite captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannin. This is a masculine Morey-Saint-Denis, bold and forthright with a spicy, structured finish, a premier cru that needs at least five years in bottle to soften, yet the potential is all here.

Haunting aroma that only Pinot can give – manages to be fruitily fragrant and savoury and lightly spiced all at the same time. Lightish on the palate, already rounded and tannins almost soft though the freshness pulls it in a bit tighter on the finish. (JH)
A relatively straight forward expression of Morey comes through in the 2012 Morey Saint Denis Les Faconnieres. The 2012 is quite pretty and it shows good intensity, but it also is a bit compact next to the Aux Chezeaux, with slightly angular contours and a bit less overall harmony. Virgile Lignier used 50% whole clusters here.
