The 2014 Tour de Pez had a rather stilted and, dare I say, under-ripe nose that lacked the fruit intensity of its peers. The palate is dry and lean on the entry, quite hard in texture, gaining a little more harmony towards the finish. On this showing, it just does not have the substance and density I seek in a Saint Estèphe. Tasted September 2016.

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 14 months in oak (30% new). Some vanilla on the nose and overall a bit spirity, even though the alcohol is apparently 13%. Rather lean on the palate, with the oak giving more flavour than the fruit, it seems, so that the tannins are a bit drying on the finish. (JH)
