Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2027-2045, Neal Martin, Oct 2025

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is clearly darker in colour than its peers. It offers more fruit concentration and opulence on the nose—a rare facet in this growing season—with inky purple fruit and a floral component that emerges with time. The palate is sweeter and more fruit driven than its peers, with blackberry, blueberry and a light cassis note, though it does not have the complexity or terroir expression of its peers. It feels as if it is trying too hard. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample. Deep crimson. The same ripeness as on the two Chambolles, as if there was a touch of oxidation on these samples. Or is this their style? Really ripe fresh and dried cherries. Really concentrated, mouth-watering freshness but lacks a bit of zest in the fruit. Chewy, textured tannins, built for the longer term. Not my favourite style but might suit those who find 2021 too light. (JH)

The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, from vines planted in 1930/1931, comprises of two barrels this year. The nose was closed when we met, broody blackcurrant and blueberry scents, a bit reduced. The palate is more expressive with fine tannins, shimmering black fruit, orange zest and Asian spices. This builds in the mouth and fans out, whereas other Bonnes-Mares have come across as relatively skinny. This could turn out to be one of the best from this Grand Cru.
