The 2019 Opalie Coutet has an expressive nose with white flowers, dried apricot and light pear notes that become more intense with aeration. The palate is balanced with a crisp entry, quite taut with fine depth, fanning out with style on the finish. This is worth seeking out. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

Tasted blind. Light nose. Creamy start with more obvious acidity than most. Really quite tart acidity on the end. Not yet integrated. (JR)
Grip and momentum through the palate. The limestone soils of Barsac help give juice and lift to the lemon curd and white peach flavours after the dry summer of 2019, and there is subtle but sappy slate minerality. 9 months barrel ageing.

Classified as a First Growth in 1855, this Barsac property has a history stretching back to the 14th century. Today it has 38.5 hectares of vineyard, producing brilliant sweet wines cut by taut acidity. In certain years, it produces Cuvée Madame, pure botrytised Semillon from its oldest vines.
