One of the youngest, darkest, bluest wines of this J&B retrospective. Composty nose with sweetness. Rather jagged and unresolved. Lots of slightly austere acidity but this may be the vintage rather than the grower. (JR)

The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux is a big, explosive wine loaded with dark fruit, smoke and licorice. It shows fabulous intensity in its rich expression of fruit. The Champeaux saw 100% new oak which will require bottle age to integrate. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. Arnaud Mortet told me he is working with less extraction and lower levels of new oak than his father used to employ. Mortet did 5 days of cold maceration followed by 20 or so days of fermentation with very light extraction. The malos finished between June and November 2010, on the late side for the vintage. Very dark crimson indeed. Tamer than the Lavaux. Very flattering and rich. But with lots of acidity too. Clean and tense and lively. Well done! (JR)
