The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru is clearly a step up on the nose compared to the Village Cru, with much more complexity and terroir expression. It displays a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and hints of clove. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and dark cherry fruit, mulberry and a dash of white pepper. It maybe just misses the complexity of the 2020 on the finish. It should give at least a decade of pleasure.

Bursting with aromas of cherries, plums and wild berries mingled with hints of licorice and vine smoke, the 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots (Domaine Gagey) is medium to full-bodied, soft, fleshy and round, with a rich, gourmand profile.
Cask sample. Mid crimson. Noticeably darker than the Côte de Beaune wines. Some rather obvious sweetness. And then a bit chunky and chewy after all the Beaunes. Solid rather than graceful. May evolve but seems yet another example where price and quality are out of kilter. Quite a bit of chew and just a slight suggestion of bitterness. (JR)
