The 2021 Château Mauvesin Barton is also fresh and lively, with a nicely balanced, medium-bodied style as well as attractive aromatics of darker currants, cedary herbs, and lead pencil. It's up-front, ready-to-go, and will evolve nicely over the coming 10-12 years.
The 2021 Mauvisin Barton has a well-defined bouquet with brambly red fruit, crushed iris flower and a hint of cinnamon. Very classic in style, it’s nicely focused with neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with more tension than the Deuxième Vin and gentle grip. Quite juicy in style thanks to the 48% Merlot, a pinch of cracked black pepper emerges toward the finish, tingling on the aftertaste.
The 2021 Mauvesin Barton was picked from 30 September until 11 October and aged in one-third new oak. There is more Cabernet this year (52%) due to frost damage. It has a vibrant nose with black cherries, bilberry and perhaps more floral scents than I have encountered apropos previous vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, not a deep or powerful Moulis, yet well-balanced and surfeit with freshness, a pleasant bitter swerve on the finish.
