The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnet 1er Cru offers slightly darker fruit on the nose, freshly-rolled tobacco and a hint of cigar smoke. Sweet entry on the palate, quite fleshy though one of the few in this flight that just misses acidic "bite", rendering the finish a little monotonous vis-à-vis its peers. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet has turned out brilliantly, wafting from the glass with a beautiful bouquet of cherries, cassis, wild berries, rose petals and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegant and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, powdery tannins and succulent acids.
Deepish crimson. Very ripe fruit, fresh and dried cherries. Chewy and a bit flat on the palate but more intense than the Evocelles. (JH)
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru is bestowed with darker fruit than the Evocelles at the moment, offering well-defined blackberry and light briary aromas. There is a pleasing minerally undercurrent at play here. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins lending fine backbone, but this does not possess the same degree of precision and charm as the Evocelles toward the finish. Let’s see if it develops by the time of bottling.
