Da bere 0-0, Neal Martin, Mar 2026

The 2022 Branas Grand Poujeaux feels rather muddled on the nose compared to its peers, finally cohering with aeration, but it still needs more precision. The palate is medium-bodied with attractive black fruit, well integrated oak and impressive weight on the finish. The aromatics should pull their socks up with bottle age. This is definitely not the best bottle that I have tasted, so I will defer scoring this. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

Cassis, graphite, classy oak, and violet notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Branas Grand Poujeaux, a richly textured, medium to full-bodied, concentrated Moulis that has beautiful tannins, integrated background oak, and a great finish. It needs 4-5 years in the cellar and will unquestionably put a smile on your face over the following 10-12+ years.

The 2022 Marpaout, from a single vineyard parcel of 100% Merlot planted in deep gravel soils, showcases a delineated, vivid bouquet with black cherry, wild strawberry and light gravelly tones. Proprietor Arjen Pen drove me to inspect the plot firsthand. This cuvée, aged in four barrels from different cooperages for twelve months and another twelve in amphorae, intriguingly resembles Cabernet when tasted blind. The palate is smooth on entry with a sweet core of red fruit, touches of white pepper and graphite and finely chiseled tannins. It is quite taut towards the finish, displaying impressive weight and length. I understand why this cuvée was inaugurated—it's very impressive. Readers should note that this cuvée was not produced in 2023. 14.5% alcohol.

Clear precision and flesh to the brambled fruit, has grip and depth, holds on through the palate, firm tannins, blackberry and damson fruits and a ton of blue cheese and salted cracker salinity on the finish to add juice and lift. 16 months in barrel, 50% new oak, 5% amphora for the first time with this vintage. Tasted twice, a few months apart, impressive vintage at this 17ha property that is getting serious about quality.
