FINE+RARE, Apr 2023

With some of its vines neighbouring those of Ch. Margaux, Malescot St-Exupéry can be a great-value buy – and that is particularly true in 2022. The wine is polished, with ripe purple fruit – a combination of dark plum, blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry. Ripe with real depth to the palate, there’s a firmness to the structure here, but a pleasing savoury character to the long, mineral finish.

The 2022 Malescot Saint-Exupéry articulates more of the sunny growing season than Lascombes, just a touch of fig and raisin infusing that plush, luxuriant black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, gentle grip, quite fleshy, but it feels just a little monotone towards the finish compared to its peers. I suspect that might be because it is beginning a more closed phase that underwrites my lower score. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

Aromas of sweet blackberries, espresso roast, petals and toasty oak introduce the 2022 Malescot St. Exupery, a medium to full-bodied, rich but lively wine with a ripe core of jammy fruit, supple tannins and a slightly evolved finish. This appears to have lost a touch of precision during élevage.

Spicy red and black currants, leafy tobacco, spicy wood, loamy earth, and some sappy floral notes emerge from the 2022 Château Malescot Saint Exupéry, an incredibly complex, pure, elegant 2022 that has polished tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. Based on 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, drink this incredibly impressive, satisfying Margaux over the coming two decades.
