2022 Langoa Barton

Note di degustazione
Inky purple, this is ripe and sweet-fruited – with bright cassis and a glossy polish from 60% new oak. There’s such density to the fruit at the core of this wine, with a forward and generous feel, yet the acidity is juicy and the tannins deliciously round and smooth. This feels particularly complete in 2022.

The 2022 Langoa Barton has a showy nose, blackberry and blueberry fruit, quite floral in style with well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with plush, very ripe tannins. Thankfully, the acidity maintains freshness but this is another Saint-Julien that feels dictated by the summer heat and detracts from its complexity. I believe there are better bottles to be found. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.
Quite a classic wine for this hot and dry year. Excellent depth but also freshness, with convincing ripeness and a very long finish. Just medium to full body, with gritty tannins at the end. The fruit sweetness here is restrained. 60% new oak. Drink or hold.
The 2022 Langoa Barton has turned out superbly in bottle. Offering up aromas of cassis, blackberries, pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with velvety tannins, lively fruit and a long, penetrating finish. Seamless, integrated and intense, Langoa's more morcellated vineyards means that this estate has, if anything, gained even more from the Barton family's new vat room than its big brother Léoville Barton, as each parcel can now be fermented separately, optimizing its potential. This is the best young Langoa Barton I can remember tasting.

Hugh Barton purchased this estate, alongside Second Growth Ch. Léoville Barton, in the 1820s. Classified as a Third Growth and run by Lilian Barton with her children Damien and Mélanie today, the 20 hectares of vines produce some of the appellation’s most elegant wines – and at reasonable prices.
