The 2021 Château Haut-Bergey has lots of horsey, spicy, exotic, and wild notes as well as ripe blue fruits, medium-bodied richness, and some firmer tannins. It's for those who can handle plenty of brett in their wines.

The 2021 Haut-Bergey comes across a bit muddled on the nose and misses the typicité one expects. Oddly, there is something almost Burgundian here. The palate seems to have some residual sugar and exhibits some CO2. I am sorry…this just comes across as faulty winemaking that is totally avoidable. Tasted from two bottles—the second even more wretched than the first.

An estate that offers great value wines in Pessac, one to look out for, but it struggles in the vintage. There are black and blue fruits here, but they skirt full ripeness, with angular tannins.

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot. Deeply coloured. First bottle: strange aroma, both ripe and raisiny as well as a touch leafy. Tough tannins and raisined on the palate too. Second bottle requested: not oxidised but still green with dry, grippy tannins. (JH)

Haut Bergey

Since Paul Garcin took over running this estate in 2014, it has become one of Pessac-Léognan’s most exciting addresses. Biodynamic and with a minimalist approach, Ch. Haut-Bergey makes pure and expressive wines that offer both great value and a taste of the modern Bordeaux.
