Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2018-2032, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2016

The 2012 Bellefont-Belcier shows a distinctly powerful and virile side of Saint-Emilion. I expect the 2012 is going to need some time to come together, as it is quite tannic in the early going. Still, it does appear to have more than enough density to fill out its broad-shouldered profile. Attractive scents of lavender, licorice, smoke, tobacco, game and earthiness add the closing shades of nuance. The blend is 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

A blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (a classic blend), this 2012 is a mineral-dominated style of wine, with blackcurrants, black cherries, and loads of chalky, dusty limestone notes. It is medium-bodied, structured, slightly austere, but undeniably a successful effort in 2012. This will appeal to those looking for more masculine, mineral-laden wines. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. Alcohol is a lofty 14.5%.

Bought by a Chinese investor in 2012. 72% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep dark cherry colour. Lifted cassis fruit purity. A touch of liquorice. Grainy and just fresh enough. A bit flat in the middle. (JH)
