Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2027-2048, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2024

The 2021 Château Villemaurine checks in as 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, raised in a mix of new and used barrels. It has an incredible sense of minerality as well as notes of cassis, tobacco, charcoal, and graphite. Needing air to show at its best, it's medium-bodied, has a structured, firm mouthfeel, remarkable purity, and a great finish. It's one of the few 2021s that really needs 3-4 years of bottle age, and it should evolve for upwards of two decades. This wine can display a slightly modern style (especially in the past) on release, yet it possesses a classic Saint-Emilion sense of minerality. This is a château to watch.

The 2021 Villemaurine has an intense bouquet with blackberry, cassis and violet scents, perhaps needing a few more months to fully coalesce. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite vibrant and tensile with a dash of white pepper toward the finish. This fans out nicely with time in the glass. Promising.

Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2028-2041, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2024

The 2021 Villemaurine is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Crushed rose petal, cinnamon, new leather, spice and tobacco are beautifully delineated. The 2021 is rich and heady, but also full of intrigue. This Villemaurine is not an obvious wine, as it can be, but it’s all there. Bright acids add salivating intensity on the long finish. Tasted two times.

A strong effort that has turned out well in bottle, the 2021 Villemaurine offers up pure aromas of ripe cherries and berries mingled with mint and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless, with an enveloping core of fruit, lively acids and a mineral finish, it left me impressed.
