Tasted blind. First bottle: almond essence and oddly fruity. Second bottle: odd ripe fruit and still that almond character. Smells as if it has been over-handled in the winery. Or some botrytis? (JH)

From Helene Garcin (who does a fabulous job with all her family’s estates), this blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot exhibits a Graves-like bouquet of scorched earth, charcoal embers, red and black currants, loamy soil and tobacco leaf. With good ripeness, decent acidity and sweet tannin, it is not as big and rich as some top vintages have been, but it is a charming red to enjoy over the next 6-8 years.
Slightly reductive character which is a bit like cabbage. Light texture, slight vanilla note from oak. A bit bony. (RH)

Since Paul Garcin took over running this estate in 2014, it has become one of Pessac-Léognan’s most exciting addresses. Biodynamic and with a minimalist approach, Ch. Haut-Bergey makes pure and expressive wines that offer both great value and a taste of the modern Bordeaux.
