I found both of the 2006 releases from Domaine du Grand Tinel to be outstanding. The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Alexis Establet is a special cuvee that’s from 100% Grenache, all from the La Gardiole lieu-dit, and was raised mostly in larger oak tanks called tronconiques. It’s a medium to full-bodied, lively, balanced effort that shows the more mid-weight style of the vintage, as well as classy notes of black cherries, currants, dried flowers and plenty of southern Rhone inspired spice and cedar. Drink it anytime over the coming 4-5 years.

Showing brilliantly, the 100% Grenache 2006 Domaine du Grand Tinel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Alexis Establet, aged 40% in concrete tank, and the rest in foudre, boast gorgeous aromas of spice-laced red fruits, bouquet garni, licorice, and dried meats on the nose. Firing on all cylinders aromatically, this medium to full-bodied, balanced Châteauneuf-du-Pape has a classy, fresh feel, loads of sweet fruit, and a classic finish; it’s superb now, but should continue to shine through 2020.
Vivid ruby. Sexy aromas of candied red berries, kirsch, potpourri and anise. Lush raspberry and cherry compote flavors are complemented by black olive and licorice and enlivened by zesty minerals. Quite suave, and delicious now.
Not the most concentrated colour and one of those wines that smells of buckwheat/cereals rather than fruit... Very solid and satisfying in traditional style. A bit chewy and alcoholic on the finish but a good wine for traditionalists. The all-Grenache vines here are apparently 103 years old. (JR)
