The 2020 La Romanée Grand Cru has a beautiful bouquet with pure redcurrant and cranberry fruit, deftly integrated oak, laser-like precision and focus. This is Pinot Noir at its apotheosis. The palate is medium-bodied with mineral-laden fruit that presently hides behind a new oak veneer. This feels polished, perhaps a little too much, but that's just its youthfulness. Orange rind and a dash of white pepper build towards the finish with a long, lightly spiced aftertaste. Stunning. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

0.8452 ha, situated on a 10- to 12-degree slope with complex geology. Base of grey-beige marl, covered with reddish silt, gravel and ‘gelifracted’ limestone (erosion due to freeze/thawing). Rows planted north–south, perpendicular to the slope. 50-year-old vines, 4,000 bottles. Cask sample. Glorious nose. Violets. Intense, deep, powerful on the palate yet so refined and typical of all that is best in the C ô te d’ O r. Plenty of acidity, restrained and integrated oak, tannins need a few years to resolve but, give it 5 years, and this will be a spectacular wine. (AWH)
The 2020 La Romanée Grand Cru showed a little reduction on the entry. This takes time to unfurl on the nose, luscious black cherries, blueberry, pressed violet and orange blossom. There is a sensuality here that I think distinguishes it from its famous adjacent fellow monopole. The palate is medium-bodied is very well balanced with firm backbone. Dense and imbued with a precise silver thread of acidity, this La Romanée comes armed with a sense of symmetry towards the finish with a long, slightly peppery aftertaste. Regal.
