The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Carrières comes from marn blanche soil that Gilbert told me was likely to have once been planted with Chardonnay. It is situated on the left side as you enter the village from the RN74. It has a much more floral bouquet than the Chambolle les Fuées: violet and rose petals littered over the mixture of red and black fruit, but with perhaps less mineralité than its fellow premier crus at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with gently gripping tannin, a vein of tar entering stage left toward the structured finish that delivers quite a long brown spice aftertaste. This is a competent, nicely crafted Chambolle that should give a decade's worth of pleasure.

Has a boiled sweet style of black fruit. Very distinctive and powerful, but that confected sort of quality is not immediately associated with Burgundy. (RH)
