Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2024-2044, Jeb Dunnuck, Jan 2020

More cassis, black fruits, smoked earth, and a kiss of green herbs emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon A. Price Vineyard, which is all varietal and comes from a site in St. Helena. Brought up in 100% new oak, it hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied, straight, focused, tight mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and terrific overall balance. The purity of fruit is top-notch, and it has a wonder Cabernet typicity. I suspect 3-4 years of bottle age will do it well and it should evolve for more than two decades.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Price is sensual, racy and inviting, as wines from St. Helena tend to be. Super-ripe red cherry, red plum, spice, mint and floral notes all meld together in an unctuous, dense Cabernet that will drink well with minimal cellaring. There is so much to like. The Price is, once again, the most immediate of the three wines in this range.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon A. Price (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is deep garnet-purple colored and has a provocatively plummy, warm cassis and black berry preserves nose with hints of cinnamon stick, bay leaves and tilled soil with a waft of pencil lead. Medium-bodied, the palate has a lovely interplay of stewed black fruits and dried herbs, with firm, chewy tannins and a savory finish.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Price is powerful and dense in the glass. A touch of reduction attenuates the aromatics, but the Price is always a wine more of texture than anything else, and it is easy to see all of that richness. Beams of tannin add to the wine's energetic feel. It will be interesting to watch how the 2017 develops as it finishes its aging in barrel.
