The most muscular and reserved of Roty's communal lieux-dits this year is the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas, a terrific wine that unwinds in the glass with scents of cherries, cassis and smoked meats mingled with nuances of orange rind and truffle. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textural, it's structured around an ample chassis of powdery tannin and lively acids.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas has a pretty bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberry and fine crushed stone aromas. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red fruit, fine tannins and orange zest and marmalade toward the finish, which shows good precision and grip. Excellent.
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur Bas has a slightly higher toned bouquet than the La Brunelle with cassis-tinged fruit, hints of graphite developing in the glass, aeration appearing to encourage it to close up shop rather than open up. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, that graphite element becoming more and more pronounced towards the tensile, fresh and persistent finish. Very impressive.
