Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2025-2035, Audrey Frick, jebdunnuck.com, Dec 2025

The base year of the NV Champagne La Reserve Brut is 2021, and it is a blend of 57% Chardonnay, 29% Pinot Noir, with the rest Meunier. Spending four years on the lees, the wine has a brilliant pale yellow hue and is attractive and fresh, with lively notes of pear, white peach, candied citrus, and fresh Pepperidge Farm shortbread cookies. Medium-bodied, it’s approachable, charming, and quite appealing, a delightful aperitif to enjoy and pour by the case. Drink 2025-2035. It contains 6.1 grams per liter and 57% reserve wine, including vintages 2020, 2018, 2016, and 2015. QR codes are available on each bottle for all the technical details. Founded in 1947, Palmer & Co. are established wine growers, mainly in Premier and Grand Crus of the Montagne de Reims, producing around one million bottles annually, with 80% exported. While they also have some wines from the Côte de Blancs and other areas, they are considered specialists of northern Montagne de Reims. In the cellar, they primarily use stainless steel. They maintain three soleras: one for Chardonnay, nearly 40 years old from Trépail and Marmery, which is used for the liqueur in dosage; another for red wine aged 50 years; and a Pinot Noir solera for a special Blanc de Noirs blend. Barrels are used only for the soleras. They also have a winery dedicated to making their red wine, which ages in old barrels in the cellars for 7 months. They perform malolactic fermentation because of the grapes’ origin.

52% Chardonnay, 32% Pinot Noir, 16% Pinot Meunier. Based on 2020 vintage, with 36% reserve wines dating back to 2016. Aged 48 months on lees. Dosage 6.1 g/l. Tasted blind. Nutty character that reminds me of Vouvray in some ways. If this is a Chenin, then it has the right character! Bright acid, super-tangy profile, but not too sharp or intrusive. Moderate length, only slight autolytic character. The nutty note persists on the aftertaste. (RH)

This house is based in Reims, and all of the wines from Palmer & Co. were raised in stainless steel without the use of oak barrels. The NV Champagne La Reserve is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and the rest Meunier, with 22% reserve wine. It pours a bright yellow hue, and the nose opens to aromas of baked apples, lemon curd, and smoky earth. The palate is zesty and citrus-driven, with a spritely mousse and a bit of spice on the finish. It’s a solid, straightforward offering to drink over the near term. It saw 6.5 grams per liter dosage.

The latest rendition of Palmer's NV Brut Réserve is quite reserved out of the gates, unwinding with notes of crisp orchard fruit, citrus zest and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, taut and tangy, with bracing acids and a pinpoint mousse, it's not quite as generous as its immediate predecessors have been.
