Punteggio 96/100 · James Suckling, Jul 2022

The expansive nose of fresh black cherry and dry earth leads you into this very compact and concentrated Gevrey-Chambertin, which has the scale and gravitas of a Grand Cru, as well as massive tannin structure. This youthful form might be too much for some, but if you have a little patience, this is going to be a magnificent drinking experience. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is very pretty, unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, dark berries, peonies and wintergreen. Medium to full-bodied, bright and tightly wound, with fine, chalky tannins and lively acids, it will require some bottle age.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is one cuvée from the appellation that felt a little smudged, perhaps picked a day or two tardy. The palate is rich and sweet, quite bold and assertive but lacking some nuance and tension on the finish. Let’s see if it improves by the time of bottling.

A fresher clear purple compared to many wines this year. Beautifully pure, a very accurate rendition of the stony white soil of Estournelles, with length and grace.
