Much darker and more exotic, the 2020 Zotovich Vineyard Pinot Noir has more mulled red (and some black) fruits as well as roasted herbs, forest floor, and gamey nuances to go with a medium-bodied, supple, rounded, structured style on the palate. It's more firm, focused and tannic, and will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age. These latest releases from Gavin Chanin are pretty much straight-up brilliant across the board. Gavin pulls from some of the top sites in Santa Barbara County and favors a little bit of stems depending on the vineyard and aging in mostly neutral barrels. These are pure, classic, incredibly impressive wines that offer plenty of enjoyment in their youth, yet they can also evolve and age gracefully. As I write in the reviews, these wines are rarely about power and opulence and shine for their remarkable elegance, purity, and finesse. I love the wines.

The 2020 Pinot Noir Zotovich Vineyard is another very pretty wine from Gavin Chanin. Bright and translucent in the glass, with striking purity, the 2020 is beguiling from the very first taste. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, sage, incense and dried flowers are beautifully lifted. I would give this a year or two to soften, as the tannins are pretty evident. A burst of sweet floral notes punctuate the finish.
