75% Syrah, 13% Petite Sirah, 7% Garnacha, 2% Malbec, 2% Cariñena, 1% Petit Verdot grown on granite soils at 1,720–2,206 m above sea level. Indigenous-yeast fermentation, 50% destemmed, 50% whole cluster in rock lagars. Foot-trodden. Garnacha fermented separately in concrete tank to avoid oxidation. Matured 9 months in 1,600-litre concrete eggs, 2,500-litre foudre and 6,000-litre concrete tank. 27,694 bottles. pH 3.49, RS 1.7 g/l. Excellent concentration with a spicy, meaty charcuterie quality and layered pepper and blackberry. High acid, dried herbs, rippling firm tannin. Firm acid. This is really quite savoury and stony on the finish. (SCJ)

The entry-level red 2019 Grus was produced with a blend of 75% Syrah, 13% Petite Sirah, 7% Garnacha, 2% Malbec, 2% Cariñena and 1% Petit Verdot, where Syrah replaced most of the Petit Verdot. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and 20% to 60% full clusters in stone lagares and matured in a combination of concrete eggs and oak foudres for nine months (it used to be 17). It kept a moderate 13.6% alcohol and very good freshness and acidity. There is a flinty sensation in this wine. In 2019, a year that was warm, dry and ripe, they had to harvest early in Elqui, and all the grapes were ready at the same time, which all complicates things. The wine feels very primary and fresh without any of the sweetness many wines in Chile can have in 2019. It's vertical and stony, reflecting the place, fresher than 2017. 27,694 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2019.
