Charles van Canneyt has 0.5 hectares of this Premier Cru, sandwiched between Clos de la Perrière and Le Clos Blanc. It’s one to watch – and a site that Charles thinks is benefiting from global warming, thanks to its limestone soils. The 2021 is a mesmerising wine, offering more depth than the village wines – and a marked step up in quality. Wild strawberry and cherry fruit swirl together, while there’s a density and salinity that offset each other beautifully. There’s a fine framework behind the fruit that build gradually on the palate, fleshed out with sweet spice, velvet fruit and mineral freshness. The finish is floral and lifted, with the lush fruit evolving into crystallised rose petals. Stunning.

The 2021 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru has a pretty, quite cohesive bouquet with red cherry and wild strawberry, hints of pressed rose petals and incense. Fine delineation and a bit of gusto here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Lovely red fruit, bright and perky with the rondeur and sensuality you look for in a Chambolle. Not amazingly complex or detailed but quite delicious. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
The 2021 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru is well-defined on the nose with blackberry, raspberry and light mineral scents, and just a touch of green olive in the background. The palate is well balanced with firm tannins, quite peppery with what I feel is a little greenness on the finish. Jury is out on this one at the moment.
