FINE+RARE, Nov 2022

A well-placed Premier Cru vineyard, neighbouring Clos Saint-Jacques on the heightened Combe Lavaut, this was a highlight of our tasting at Faiveley in 2021. The nose is sweet with rich, dark berry fruit cut by pepper spice and floral tones. The palate is firm in texture, with iodine bite, but has stunning clarity and precision, fine-boned with mouth-watering acidity and a long, silken finish.

The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has an open-knit bouquet with attractive red berry fruit, undergrowth and light floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with finely spun tannins and exquisite balance, poised and refined with a tender finish. All this without feeling you are being shortchanged in terms of fruit. Superb. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a touch of reduction but there is more complexity vis-a-vis the Latricières, a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and pressed flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, well balanced, a liberal sprinkling of black pepper with a nicely focused and quite structured finish (for the vintage). Very fine.
