FINE+RARE, Nov 2022

The fruit here is purchased, but always from the same o.7-hectare plot of 45 to 50-year-old vines in the upper part of the vineyard, and the grower is one that Bouchard has worked with for many years. They choose the date of harvest and pick the fruit themselves. This is particularly dark-fruited in 2021, with swathes of blackberry and almost blackcurrant fruit, refreshed by a wave of red cherry. There’s a brightness to the wine, despite its concentration, making it feel surprisingly accessible now. The powdered tannins provide a framework for the fruit, building to a long, crushed-rock and cherry-kernel finish.

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from the négociant side, from the same 0.8-hectare plot harvested by Bouchard’s team one hour before the rain. This has quite a reduced nose, metallic at the moment and occluding the terroir expression. The palate is balanced on the entry, quite rounded with ample fruit, mulberry and red plum mixed with dried herbs. Harmonious on the finish. Give this time in bottle before broaching.

The 2021 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis and blackberries mingled with spices and licorice. Full-bodied, rich and layered, it's supple and fleshy, with broad shoulders and a long, resonant finish.
