Lamarche’s Clos de Vougeot comes from two plots on opposite sides of the vineyard – one near the château and one on the southeast side – giving a complete representation of this Grand Cru. After the Echezeaux, this is such a completely different wine – with more savoury tones and sweeter fruit. It’s cherry bright, the fruit wafting from the glass. It’s the palate, however, that really impresses – expanding on the mid-palate to fill the mouth with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, before narrowing to a precise, powdered, mineral finish. There’s such nervosity here, with bright acidity and beautiful length.

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a light, tertiary bouquet that is very ephemeral, as if a light draught could blow the aromatics away. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins that frame tart red fruit. Quite peppery in style though there is not much weight and grip on the finish at the moment. This needs to gain weight during the remainder of its barrel maturation.
