The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very high-toned bouquet, leaning more towards California than the Côte d’Or. It is pure and heady with cassis and blueberry aromas. It’s just a little trop. The palate is actually better with fine grip on the entry, saturated tannin, quite spicy and peppery towards the finish. Not bad, but it lacks class and finesse. Tasted from an ex-domaine bottle in London.

Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, this domaine has a long history and impressive vineyards (with over five hectares of Grand Cru), but has long been considered an under-performer. Today, however, the Bouygues brothers (of Montrose and Clos Rougeard) have taken ownership and change is afoot.
