A blend of Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Le Mortelle’s 2017 Ampio delle Mortelle shows a soft and luscious quality that is spurred on by the heat and dryness of the vintage. However, the wine is also reined in, and that ripeness is contained especially in terms of the bouquet and the tannins. The Ampio offers ample intensity, but the wine does not go overboard in terms of its extract or concentration. There’s no mistaking this for a warm-climate Tuscan wine, yet you can also appreciate its overall balance. It is released in numbered bottles with a production of just 4,434 bottles.
