This wine’s pale appearance belies its density – with a crunchy and vibrant core of focused, pure and juicy strawberry fruit, cut by minerality. The nose is perfumed with notes of violet and cherry fruit that are elegant and enticing, with a mouth-watering freshness but a dry, tannic structure that points to significant ageing potential.

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a slightly plumper bouquet than its peers, with ripe red cherries, red plums and orange pith, and perhaps just a slight haze of alcohol. The palate is medium-bodied with a sour entry and decent weight. Even though it does not deliver the mineralité or tension of the best wines in this flight, it has a bit of grit, which I appreciate. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a rather stoic nose, with backward, light red berry fruit laced with decaying leaves that gradually unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, good density, dark berry fruit laced with orange rind and a pinch of white pepper. It misses the length and grace on the finish that a more benevolent season would bring. Fine.
