Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2023-2035, Neal Martin, Mar 2021

The 2018 Le Moulin has a very ripe bouquet of macerated black cherries and those hints of caramel that I noticed out of barrel, though they are less conspicuous in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a fairly oaky entry and moderate acidity, but it clams up toward the finish and feels just a little sour. Maybe that will disappear with bottle age. I hope so, since this Pomerol does have commendable concentration.

The 2018 Le Moulin is a racy, flamboyant Pomerol, just as it was in barrel. A rush of dark red cherry fruit, rose petal, mint, lavender and sage all race across the palate. There is a bit of tightness on the finish, perhaps attributable to the 20% Cabernet Franc. This is nicely done.

Another naughty heavy bottle like its stablemate Ch Patris Querre. Founding member of the Grand Cercle with consultants Grand Cercle founder Alain Raynaud and also Murielle Thunevin of Ch Valandraud. From just 2.4 ha of fairly sandy soils just inside the appellation, this 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc blend was aged in new barriques. Mid to dark garnet. Savoury nose with an extremely sweet palate entry. This lacks the lusciousess of the finer Pomerols. Purple-fruit notes and a little drying quality on the end which may fade with time. There's a suggestion of heat on the end too. Needs a bit of time to come together but it will always be scrabbling to keep up with the better Pomerols, I fear. (JR)

The 2018 Le Moulin offers a payload of sweet cassis and raspberry fruit on the nose, just a bit heady for my liking, with hints of fig and caramel in the background. The palate is actually better controlled: creamy in texture with precocious black cherries and blackcurrant fruit laced with black pepper and Provençal herbs. It maintains fine delineation on the finish and ends up being quite a seductive Pomerol.
