The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru has a generous nose of more black fruit than red, quite spicy with just a touch of curry leaf. The medium-bodied palate delivers sappy red fruit, a smooth texture and moderate depth. It just lacks a little complexity toward the finish when you wish it would kick on. A bit conservative, yet you would still contentedly finish a glass. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru has a pure, vivacious bouquet, with wet granite/sea cave scents permeating the red fruit and blood orange scents surfacing with continued aeration. The taut, crisp palate is medium-bodied, displaying supple tannin and a tingle of licked limestone toward the finish. This is quite an intellectual Aux Combottes and I can see it giving two decades of drinking pleasure.
Once again there is a background whiff of oak to the spicy and overtly floral-suffused aromas of various red berries. There is a bit more volume to the rich and caressing medium weight flavors that display slightly better balance though the moderately austere finish isn't particularly persistent.
