Vecina is coined from the Spanish word for neighbour. Vecina is situated directly south-east of the Bond winery in Oakville’s western foothills. The 11-acre site is on the border between Oakville and Yountville at 221 to 330 feet. Volcanic bedrock under fine-grained alluvial wash are on east-facing terraced slopes that receive cool morning sun. Vecina also benefits from the cool air at night that comes up from San Pablo Bay after long, warm afternoons. Heady, opulent, almost perceptible VA! But not (quite) porty. Bigger than the UK desirable norm, I would have thought, but a well-made exponent of super-ripe Napa Cab. Just not quite refreshing enough for me. (JR)

A richer, more structured wine, the 2017 Vecina nevertheless still shows the more elegant style of all these 2017s. Lots of cassis, dark chocolate, bouquet garni, and gravelly earth notes define the bouquet, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with building, chalky tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. It needs 3-4 years of bottle age but will have two decades of longevity.
The 2017 Vecina is outrageously beautiful. Inky and deep, it possesses stunning richness, power and structure. Its pedigree and sheer beauty are immediately evident. Over the last year, the 2017 has gained quite a bit of depth and overall resonance I did not see in the barrel samples. As a reminder, Vecina is sourced from Vine Hill Ranch, specifically Block 6 Upper, one of the best locations on the ranch.
