Tasted blind. Too oaky. Smooth texture and hard on the palate. (JR)

The 2021 Château Grand Mayne showed beautifully, with a spicy, red and black-fruited, complex profile as well as medium-bodied richness and depth. This forward, charming, elegant 2021 has terrific overall balance, and while I like it today, it should benefit from just a few years of bottle age and shine over the following decade.
The 2021 Grand Mayne has a gorgeous bouquet with floral scents—violets and peony. Quite lush but delineated black plummy fruit and hints of cedar emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, silky smooth in texture with a silver bead of acidity lending tension on the finish. This was promising in barrel and delivers in bottle.
The 2021 Grand Mayne offers up rich aromas of crème de cassis, fruitcake and toasty new oak, followed by a medium-bodied palate with an ample attack that segues into a mid-palate built around powdery tannins and tangy acids that carry through to the somewhat metallic finish.

The Nony family has been at the helm of this 17-hectare estate for three generations, since the 1930s, but it’s under Jean-Antoine – in charge since 2015 – that quality here has soared.
