This site is one of the region’s oldest – planted in the seventh century by the Benedictine monks. The site was once a quarry, the craggy cliffs forming an amphitheatre, shielded from the wind and basking in the sun. The resulting wine is unsurprisingly richly fruited – with ripe dark bramble and currants providing a sweet, concentrated core. There’s a saline freshness off-setting the fruit, though, and a savoury twist to the finish. Lovely density and amazing length. From 0.87 hectares.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moines has turned out very nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet cherries and blackberries mingled with vine smoke and undergrowth. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with powdery tannins and a layered, lively profile, it's not dominated by the extremes of the vintage.

(Sweet Spot Outstanding)<br /> A distinctly earthy nose reflects smoke and game nuances on the poached plum and wild berry scents. There is excellent size, weight and mid-palate density to the larger-scaled flavors that also display focused power on the mineral-driven and wonderfully persistent finish. This equally promising effort is a bit less youthfully austere finale. Good stuff provided you can cellar it appropriately.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Combe Aux Moines 1er Cru showed a very small reduction on the nose. Slightly tertiary in style, black plum intermingling with boysenberry fruit, touches of graphite coming through with time. The palate is very concentrated on the entry: a fine bead of acidity, beautifully structured with a fresh, vibrant finish and a minerally aftertaste. The component parts have to meld together here, so afford this 5-6 years in bottle.
