Colgin’s IX Estate vineyard is an east-facing site on Pritchard Hill. The Cabernet Sauvignon grown on these volcanic soils is full of minerality and freshness, producing structured wines with huge ageing potential. The aromatic complexity of the IX Estate from Colgin in 2018 is exemplary. Bloody, iodine notes mingle with violets, blueberry, bay, sage, lavender and rosemary aromas. There is a wonderful botanical, perfumed scent to the wine and a smokiness too. On the palate there is serious structure, yet while the tannins are concentrated, they remain fine, building a fantastic framework on the palate. Earthy blackcurrant, black cherry and blueberry fruit is fleshy and hugely concentrated with bitter dark chocolate notes, but never swerving into sweetness. This has a distinctly savoury character, tempering the richness of fruit. The perfumed scent continues right through to the long mineral finish. This is an epic wine that will age majestically.

The 2018 IX Estate shows a slightly more savory side of the property, with cool hints of menthol, dried sage, loamy earth and black olive bringing complexity and balance to the bold notes of black cherries and cassis. Full-bodied and concentrated, with a rich, creamy texture and lush, mocha-tinged finish, this is a complex, balanced wine with a great future ahead of it.
Blackcurrants, graphite and black mushrooms with some bark and mahogany undertones. Full-bodied with a sense of tannin but then it’s rather weightless and integrated. Tannins are very poised and focused. So fine and pointed. Tight at the end. Very reserved still, sophisticated and savory.
The 2018 IX Estate is a wine of extraordinary depth and intensity. The aromatics along are positively dazzling. Crushed herbs, lavender, spice, menthol, chocolate, licorice and gravel lend tremendous power and gravitas. Just as impressive it was last year, the 2018 is positively riveting today. What a wine!
