FINE+RARE, Oct 2021

At the same altitude as Chambertin (350-380 metres), this Fixin monopole was created by the Cistercian monks in the 12th century. It is instantly complex and gourmand, with discreet oak, beautiful red and dark berry aromas that lead to a medium-bodied palate. The tannins are silky and elegant, with notes of wild strawberry and black cherry. The site is southeast-facing, with calcareous soils that bring minerality, while the altitude adds freshness to the ripe red fruit on the mid-palate. This complex wine finishes long with notes of cherry and raspberry. The tension and texture is a joy. There are no Grands Crus in Fixin, but this seems to deserve a better classification… definitely a wine to look out for. Drink 2025-2033.

The 2020 Fixin Clos de la Perrière 1er Cru has a light, slightly stemmy bouquet with dark berry fruit laced with tobacco notes. The palate is smooth on the entry, quite fleshy with red berry fruit. I am not sure that the whole bunch quite gels with this Fixin at the moment. Let’s see once this is in bottle.

TA (sulphuric) 3.95 g/l, TA (tartaric) 6.05 g/l, pH 3.35. 40% whole bunch. 16 months’ oak ageing, 35% new. Cask sample. Fresh, quite delicate and elegant with rose petal on the nose. Seems to favour purity over power and extract. Lively, blackberry fruit, bright acidity and subtle oak. Clos de La Perrière is Fixin’s top climat. Worth a punt. (AWH) 13.5%
