Da bere 2021-2050, FINE+RARE

Henri Giraud’s Ratafia Champenois Solera 1990-2016 is a shining example of the “other” drink of Champagne. While the most gently pressed and delicate juice is reserved for Champagne, the later press sections – which contain more flavour and phenols – are used to make Ratafia. The must is then fortified with grape brandy to make a mistelle before being matured in barrel. This remarkable bottling is a solera-aged blend, containing fruit from the vintages between 1990 and 2016. With beautiful amber and copper reflections in the glass, this seems almost red in colour, while the nose is elegant and mature. The first sniff reveals subtle aromas of candied citrus, almond, honey and confit cherry . The spirit’s delicate and silky glides along the palate. There is a remarkable, nervy minerality, with excellent acidity and perfectly balanced and integrated alcohol. The finish is surprisingly fresh and sweet, really long, with crunchy hazelnuts. This is another impressive Ratafia by Henri Giraud. Offered in a rehoboam (a 4.5-litre bottle) only, this will age effortlessly and preserve all its fantastic aromas for the coming decades. Given the alcohol level, there’s no rush to drink this once open. Drink 2021-2050.

The NV Ratafia Champenois Solera 90-19 is exquisite. Aromatic and light on its feet, the 90-19 Ratafia is immediately seductive. Sweet red cherry fruit. Dried flowers, mint, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and light caramel inflections are beautifully lifted. This is so alluring. It’s hard to put the glass down.
