An enjoyable, well-made Fronsac, the 2020 Château Carlmagnus checks in as 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in 40% new oak. Offering medium-bodied richness as well as solid aromatics of red and black fruits, leafy herbs, and spring flowers, it has a good sense of elegance and solid length on the finish. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 year or so.

The 2020 Carlmagnus has a lively, quite briny bouquet that is well-defined and focused. The palate is taut and fresh with a spicy opening, fleshy on the mid-palate with orange rind and allspice mixed with licorice on the finish. Fine.
The 2020 Carlmagnus opens with striking aromatic presence. Dark cherry fruit, mocha, rose petal and lavender all develop with a bit of air. Slightly vegetal notes and hard tannins that attenuate the finish keep me from being more positive.
The 2020 Carlmagnus has a ripe, quite perfumed nose of black cherries, boysenberry and blood orange scents, becoming quite citric with aeration; nice control here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and notes of tobacco and tar. One of the most tertiary-inspired Fronsac wines. The finish is fresh but slightly short.
